Honoring Loved Ones: Establishing a New Dementia Endowment Fund

Sue Clements

Sue Clements has established a fund at Hospice & Community Care to be used in caring for people who are suffering from dementia.

Sue Clements, who has been employed at Hospice & Community Care in the Development Office since 2005, provided care for her mother and father, both of whom had dementia. As a meaningful way to remember her parents, Sue has established the Nancy M. & H. Carter Clements Dementia Care Endowment Fund at Hospice & Community Care.

"Every day, more and more people experience the effects of dementia," Sue says, "whether it is through association with a family member, friend or neighbor. The caregiver struggles as much, if not more, than the person who has the disease. It is very hard to watch the person you love begin to change so completely. Being able to understand what the person is going through and knowing how to preserve the quality of his or her life and yours is crucial to managing their care."

The income of the Nancy M. & H. Carter Clements Dementia Care Endowment Fund at Hospice & Community Care will be used to provide:

  • Dementia education and training for Hospice staff and volunteers.
  • Care for Hospice patients and their families coping with dementia.
  • Respite for family caregivers, equipment and supplies, and education.
  • Care for patients and families coping with dementia who are unable to pay for services.

The principal of the Fund will remain invested in order to perpetuate the Fund for future generations.
